Barbie Gatton is a clinical faculty member in the Department of Emergency Medicine at New York Methodist Hospital, where she also serves as the Director of Quality Assurance. As a physician involved in teaching, quality improvement, and political advocacy, Dr. Gatton has worked to advance the healthcare system on all fronts, including strong participation in professional, political, and educational organizations that work to change health care through advocacy for patients, physicians and policy reform.
Dr. Gatton first joined the Emergency Department of New York Methodist Hospital as a first-year resident in 2002, after receiving her medical degree from the School of Medicine at SUNY Stony Brook. She began representing fellow resident physicians in 2003 as a hospital delegate to the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR) and remained active as an elected member of the union leadership for four straight years, serving successive terms as Regional Vice President, Executive Vice President and President (2004-2006). Dr. Gatton also chaired the Board of Trustees for both the Patient Care Fund and House Staff Benefit Fund from 2003-2006. After completing her residency training, Dr. Gatton served as a Clinical Faculty member at Brookdale and Lincoln Hospitals before returning to New York Methodist in 2007. She became involved in local and national policy initiatives early in her career, including as Board Member of the New York Physicians for a National Health Program, member of the NYACEP Government Affairs Committee, and ACEP Policy Fellow, laying the groundwork for an active role as a physician advocate for years to come.
